Biblioteca do Brasileirinho
The Biblioteca do Brasileirinho is a dedicated Portuguese-language children’s library created to support bilingual development among Brazilian and Kiwi‑Brazilian children in Aotearoa New Zealand. It offers a curated collection of Brazilian Portuguese books, ensuring that young readers stay connected to the language, stories, and cultural expressions of Brazil.
Purpose
The library exists to nurture children’s linguistic and cultural identity by giving them regular access to books that reflect their heritage. It strengthens vocabulary, encourages reading habits, and helps families maintain Portuguese at home.
Community impact
More than a library, the Biblioteca do Brasileirinho is a cultural anchor. It supports families raising bilingual children, fosters a sense of belonging, and celebrates the richness of Brazilian storytelling within the New Zealand context.

What We Offer

Physical Books
A lively collection of Brazilian Portuguese books for young readers — from picture books to teen novels — plus the much‑loved Turma da Mônica comics. These engaging stories, rich illustrations, and familiar characters help children build confidence in Portuguese while staying connected to Brazilian culture.
We also hold a small selection of donated books for adults, including Brazilian literature and non‑fiction, offering parents and community members a chance to enjoy reading in Portuguese alongside their children.
Digital Reading Platform
Elefante Letrado is an engaging online reading platform that supports children’s literacy in Brazilian Portuguese. With a wide range of leveled books, audio support, and interactive comprehension activities, it helps young readers build confidence and develop strong reading habits. The platform makes daily reading fun and accessible, both in class and at home.
Members enrolled in classes have access to the login for the reading platform.
Library Space
A cosy, child‑friendly space where families can explore our collection of Brazilian Portuguese books together. Designed for comfort and connection, the library area invites children to browse, read, and discover stories at their own pace, while giving parents a welcoming place to relax and engage in Portuguese‑language reading with their whānau.
How It Works
- Free access to the collection for Brasileirinhos family members
- Books are used during classes and can also be taken home to support family reading time
- Families may borrow up to 4 books for 4 weeks
- Overdue items incur a small late fee
- Books must be collected and returned at Casa Brasil during open hours
- Postal delivery is available once postage costs for sending and returning the books have been paid
